ANTI-RAGGING CELL

As per UGC regulations and in view of directions of the honourable Supreme Court of India, Sahyadri Science College has taken stringent measures to check ragging in the college campus.

As per the section 2(e) of AP Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, “Ragging means doing an act which causes or is likely to insult or annoyance of fear or apprehension or threat or intimidation or outrage of modesty or injury to a student”.

Anti-Ragging Committee will be the Supervisory and Advisory Committee in preserving a Culture of Ragging Free Environment in the college Campus. The anti-ragging cell in our college was started in 2014 and Dr. Onkarappa R, Professor, Department of Microbiology was the First co-ordinator.

  • • To prohibit any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student.
  • • To control e-crime and mobile crimes.
  • • To bring about awareness about ragging.
  • • To organize orientation programs and lectures.
  • • To make college campus free and comfortable for everyone.
  • • To inculcate the values of equality, gender/social sensitivity.
  • • To make the college campus ragging free zone.
  • • Orientation programme is conducted to bring about the awareness about ragging, in this programme the senior students mingled with fresher and shared their experiences.
  • • The Anti-Ragging Committee works in tandem with Counseling Cell of the college.
  • • The college campus is declared as Ragging Free Zone.
  • • The college announces instructions to students regularly in college website and notice board.
  • • Written undertaking is taken from all students during admissions.
  • • The committee encouraged Welcome Party and Valedictory Programmes, these programmes were organized by each and every section of the college. The committee suggested to the principal to choose a particular date for the celebration of these programmes, It is hoped that the above said programmes make the fresher comfortable in the campus.
  • • The disciplinary committee maintains strict vigilance by forming Teacher Squad.
  • • Whenever there are instances of mischievous activities, the aggressors were called to the chamber of the principal and given counseling. In some instances Written Undertaking was taken from the student. • In rare cases Transfer Certificate (TC) is issued after elaborate discussion with parents.
  • • Circulars/Instructions are placed in the strategic places/corridors.
  • • Instructions about ragging/indiscipline are printed in college prospectus.
  • • Helpline Numbers, website addresses and toll free complaint helpline of UGC is prominently notified in the campus.
  • • Two anti ragging committees are constituted by the college Internal Anti Ragging Squad and External Anti Ragging Committee which includes police, media and NGO personnel.
  • • Suggestion box is placed in the corridor to receive complaints from students.
  • • Regular meetings are held to oversee disciplinary activities of students.
  • • Moral and value based lectures, extension programmes, village camps are organized to bring about the values of equality, freedom and fraternity.
  • • The committee/institution pays special importance to Gender Sensitivity and equality. Special lectures, poetry reading sessions, street plays and Jathas are arranged to inculcate the values of gender equality. • Special instructions are printed in the college prospectus, magazines, website, etc.
  • • Fines/penalties are incurred as a last resort to stop ragging activities.
  • • The government circulars, university circulars and UGC circulars and UGC circulars are taken into account and elaborately discussed in committee meetings.

It is proud to the college that during these recent years there was no Ragging or other such instances. Although the institution has taken every precautionary measure to avoid ragging or such instances in the upcoming years.
